Train but No Ticket

from 2.1: Game Face by Composit

/

about

This one deals with the unexpected loss of a friend to his struggle with mental illness, and all of the complicated emotions that came along in my attempt to reconcile my own shock and grief about it.

lyrics

I never knew the battle raging on
Beyond your smiling eyes
It took getting the news that you were gone
Before I realized
That we live life through a telephoto lens
Lose touch with our friends
And take for granted
Real-life monsters live inside our heads
Not underneath the bed
And sometimes they win

So I wish I'd known and I could have asked you
To tell me when it hurts
Though I know it might have had no impact to
Tell me when it hurts

I know I can't begin to understand
But I've tried on those shoes
When you're lost in the shadows
Giving in feels like the only route
Cause there's a train departing darkness at dawn
But you won't you can't get on
You've got no ticket
And you're overwhelmed 'cause all the notes are wrong
But so much of your song
Remains unwritten

So I wish I'd known and I could have asked you
To tell me when it hurts
Though I know it might have had no impact to
Tell me when it hurts
Oh I wish I'd known and I could have asked you
To tell me when it hurts
Though I know it might have had no impact to
Tell me when it hurts

When the train rolled out of sight
And the lonely whistle cried

I bet you felt
Caught in Between
Hung upside down
Turned inside out
Left behind and left alone
With no will to go on
But if you could have seen
Beyond the veil
How many hearts
Would be derailed
Would your strength still resign
When you saw those approaching lights?
To shoulder hope's no easy task
If only doubt had doubled back
Before you laid down on the tracks

So I wish I'd known and I could have asked you
To tell me when it hurts
Though I know it might have had no impact to
Tell me when it hurts
Oh I wish I'd known so I could have asked you
To tell me when it hurts
Though I know it might have had no impact to
Tell me when it hurts

(Cause there's a train departing darkness at dawn
But you won't you can't get on
You've got no ticket)
